How to transcribe an interview

Frequently asked questions

Does the transcription identify who is speaking?

Not automatically. The text comes out as flowing prose in the order the lines were spoken, with no speaker labels. During review, mark the turns with Q: (question) and A: (answer) or with each person's name; since the text is editable on screen, it takes a few minutes for a one-on-one interview. The .srt helps: each block carries the time, so you can check in the recording who spoke in each passage.

How do I find the exact time of a line to quote it?

Download the .srt subtitles. Each block carries the start and end time of the sentence (for example, 00:12:41). Search for the word in the file, take the time, and jump straight to that point in the recording to verify the quote before publishing or including it in your paper.

Do I need the interviewee's permission?

Yes. Recording and transcribing an interview requires the consent of the person being interviewed, and in hiring processes or academic research this is usually formalized in writing. The tool does not record anything: it only transcribes the file you already have. Responsibility for collecting and using the content is yours.

The interview was recorded on video. What now?

Upload the MP4, MOV, or MKV on the transcribe video page: we extract the audio automatically and the result is the same. If the interview happened on a Meet, Zoom, or Teams call, the transcribe meetings page (in Portuguese) explains where the recording is saved.

What is the duration limit? How much does it cost?

On the free plan, 2 transcriptions per account, up to 10 minutes each, signing in with just your email. If the interview is longer, we transcribe the first 10 minutes and you decide whether you want the rest. Rollin Ferramentas Pro unlocks files up to 2 hours with no limit on quantity; the price is in the Pro block on this page. Files up to 500 MB.

How accurate is it with two people talking?

With a well-placed microphone and one person speaking at a time, the text comes out nearly ready. Overlapping speech, laughter, street or cafe noise, and strong accents reduce accuracy, which is why reviewing the editable text is part of the job. Tip: for a phone or video-call interview, record on the side where the sound comes in cleanest.

Does it work with interviews in Portuguese or Spanish?

Yes. Leave it on "Detect automatically" or choose the language. We support English, Portuguese, and Spanish, among others. If the conversation switches between two languages, pick the dominant one. The transcript comes out in the spoken language; it does not translate.

Is the recording stored? What about source confidentiality?

It is not stored. The audio is sent encrypted and transcribed by an infrastructure provider contracted by Rollin Host only to produce the text. The file is deleted right after processing and, in any case, within one day. We never sell or share the content with anyone.
