What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is the standard protocol for querying public registration data for a domain: who the registrar is, registration/expiration dates, configured nameservers, and in some cases the registrant's contact details. Created in the 1980s, it remains the official source.
What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern successor to WHOIS — it uses HTTPS and returns structured JSON. It is more consistent across TLDs, supports authentication and privacy controls, and has been the ICANN standard since 2017. We use RDAP by default.
Why are some fields hidden?
Privacy laws (GDPR in Europe, LGPD in Brazil) require most registrars to hide personal registrant data. Brazilian .br domains show CPF/CNPJ only with authentication. Technical data (dates, nameservers, registrar) is always public.
Why does .br have different data?
Domains like .com.br, .net.br and .org.br are managed by registro.br (NIC.br), not international registries. The response format is unique — it shows Owner-c, BR-format dates, statuses like "published"/"on hold", and has its own rate limit (5 queries/min per IP).
Do you store my queries?
We do not store any query history linked to your IP or identity. We cache the RDAP result for 5-15 minutes (a good practice to reduce load on registry servers). Anyone who looks up the same domain during that window receives the cached result.
Is there a query limit?
We limit lookups to 1 per 3 seconds per IP to prevent abuse. For heavy use (portfolio monitoring), go straight to the source: rdap.registro.br for .br, rdap.org for other TLDs.
Can I register a domain here?
