What is an IP address?
An IP address is the unique identifier of your device on the internet — a sequence of numbers such as 187.10.20.30 (IPv4) or 2804:14d:5cb1:8000::1 (IPv6). It is what allows websites to know where to send the response when you make a request.
Why does my IP change?
Most residential ISPs use dynamic IPs: every time your router restarts or the provider performs maintenance, you get a new IP. For a fixed IP, ask your ISP for a static IP (usually costs extra) or use a VPS with a dedicated IP.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 is the older format (4 dot-separated numbers). IPv6 is the newer format (8 hex groups), with vastly more addresses. Most ISPs provide both simultaneously (dual-stack).
