Word count questions
How do I count the words in a text online?
Paste the text into the field above: the count appears instantly and updates with every keystroke, with no button, no sign-up and no size limit. Besides words, you see characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and the words that repeat most.
What counts as a word?
Any run of letters or numbers separated by a space or punctuation. Hyphenated words and contractions, such as well-being and don't, count as one, as do numbers and web addresses. Stray punctuation and emoji are not counted as words, but they do count as characters.
What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?
With spaces is the total of everything you typed: letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces and line breaks. It is the number social networks and Google use for their limits. Without spaces removes the blank spaces and is the measure some translation and proofreading quotes use.
How are reading time and speaking time calculated?
Reading uses 200 words per minute, the average for an adult reading a text of normal difficulty silently. Speaking uses 140 words per minute, the pace of a relaxed presentation or voice-over. For a video or podcast script, speaking time is the one that matters.
How many characters fit in each social network?
X: 280 characters per post. Instagram: 2,200 in the caption, but only the first two lines show before the more link. LinkedIn: 3,000 per post, truncated at about 210 before see more. For Google, the meta description usually displays up to 155 characters and the title up to 60. The bars above show how much room is left for each.
Is my text saved anywhere?
Not on a server: all counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent. The draft is kept only in this browser, so you do not lose the text if the page reloads, and it disappears when you click Clear.
Does it work with text in other languages?
Yes. Word and character counting works with any language that uses spaces between words, accents included. The most-used-words list ignores articles, prepositions and pronouns in English, Portuguese and Spanish; in other languages those words may show up in the list.
